MOSAIC DISTRICT, VA –September 4, 2025 – Renowned muralist Nico Cathcart earns international acclaim with her mural Mother Earth being nominated by Street Art Cities for the prestigious “Best in the World” awards for August 2025. The mural features local Falls Church real estate agent Thy Pham as Mother Earth. It was selected by Edens, the development group behind Mosaic District, to serve as the face of Mother Earth in this community-centered artwork.
This project aims to foster the growth of art appreciation and the development of open spaces in one of the most dynamic areas of Northern Virginia. The beginning of this collaboration started when the Edens group tapped Cathcart to commission a mural that represents the district’s community values.
The “Mother Earth” mural shows Pham smiling and crowned with a series of striking botanical elements including lush flowers and strawberries along with colorful Monarch butterflies set against a bright blue background. The installation showcases Cathcart’s signature style ofcombining portraiture with nature-inspired imagery, while celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Fairfax County community.
Cathcart and Pham’s collaboration began shortly after the latter was selected to be the muse of the muralist’s latest project. When it came to selecting candidates, the group chose Pham because of the connection the real estate agent had with the community, while also embodying the district’s diverse and inclusive spirit.
“The Edens group wanted someone who truly represents our community, ” said Thy, who has lived in the area for 20 years, having moved there specifically after finding out that the Mosaic District was about to be developed.
It’s surreal to see myself represented this way in a place I’ve called home for 20 years. I hope it inspires others in our community to feel proud of where they come from. ”
What followed shortly after was a photo shoot conducted by Cathcart, with Pham sitting in, which later evolved into a wonderful experience for the two of them as they got to know each other.
It was daunting to step out of my shell for the photo shoot, but Nico and I really vibed, and I think that connection enabled us to create something beautiful together. ” Pham later recalled.
The mural is part of Fairfax County’s broader initiative to promote public art throughout the region. Mosaic District already features several art installations as part of a self-guided walking tour, and the new Mother Earth mural adds to this growing collection. It will be officially unveiled as part of a grand opening celebration on September 26 at Mosaic District, coinciding with the opening of a new playground constructed in partnership with the Fairfax County Parks Department.
The playground project represents the continued collaboration between Edens and the local government to create community spaces that bring families together. “I’m honored to have these two works of mine nominated for Street Art Cities’ Best in the World recognition, ” said Cathcart on Instagram.

The recognition comes at a pivotal time for the artist’s career journey, as she continues to expand her portfolio of public art installations throughout the Virginia area and beyond
