Jor-El Espina launched a new collection that embodies his design philosophy while honoring the heritage of Filipino craft and design, under the tutelage of the Grand Dame of Philippine Fashion, Patis Tesoro herself.
Their collaboration began during an opportune visit to Tesoro’s home in San Pablo, Laguna, with the founders of ArteFino in the latter part of 2024, where Espina and the ladies enjoyed a day of chatting and spending time with Tesoro.
He recalled how it all came to be: “It was while we were enjoying her space and company that we began to explore the idea of a special collection for ArteFino. It was really because of the ladies and their generous endorsement that this dream project was brought to life.”
In the weeks that followed, Jor-El found himself delving deep into the multi-colored, richly layered universe of the famed designer, activist, and icon, who is widely respected for her lifetime’s work as a champion and conservationist of heritage and craft, celebrating the Filipino way of life as authentically as possible.
Conversations between the two were followed by afternoons spent in the workshop, immersing in the techniques that distinguish every Patis Tesoro garment as a precious piece of wearable art. “It was so enriching to watch the artisans in her shop bring her designs to life. During these visits, I began to value the work that Patis has done to preserve our traditions of craft and she pushed me to further hone my craft,” says Jor-El.
As a result, what was seen at the Makati Shangri-La lobby was a unique fusion of modern yet traditional designs that merged Espina’s signature style and Tesoro’s bohemian aesthetic. Multifunctional garments, such as peacoats, an emerald green parka, draped skirts, drop-waist dresses, cover-ups, kimonos, and piña tops, were infused with patchwork, embroidery, and hand-painting. One piece that stood out the most was a dark green parka embroidered with a trail of florals and sequins carefully stitched onto the sheer fabric, while another enchanting look that caught our eye was a drop-waist gown with blue accents and gossamer flowers delicately framed the bodice.
“As a designer, I am naturally inclined to study my references, especially when it comes to Philippine fashion,” says Jor-El. “I’ve followed the work and journey of Patis closely, and often find similarities in our design sensibilities. We both enjoy combining rich details, whether through vibrant colors, patchwork, embroidery, or beadwork.
Once the pieces were completed, Jor-El would again make the trip to Laguna to show her the collection. “Her blessing, guidance, feedback, and advice were integral to this collection. I was eager to learn, and Patis was generous with her knowledge. I wanted to make sure that every single garment reflected her essence. More than a collaboration, this is a tribute; my way of honoring Patis Tesoro.”
The 30-piece collection, aptly titled Heirloom, features one-of-a-kind pieces that bear both the Jor-El Espina and Patis Tesoro marks in each design. “The intention was also to bring the brilliance of Patis to a new or young generation; to make it more accessible. Hopefully, this will spark a fresh wave of appreciation for Patis Tesoro as well as the techniques and traditions that make Philippine fashion special,” Jor-El declares.
Apart from technique and creative wisdom, Patis refreshed Jor-El’s resolved as a designer. He concludes, “My takeaway is that as a Filipino designer, you have to always stay true to who you are and what your style is. Patis, regardless of the changes in fashion throughout the years, stuck to her guns. She continued to champion Philippine craft, fabrics, and design. She didn’t compromise her love for the Filipiniana. This exercise was a reminder of how important it is to stay authentic to who you are as a designer.”
