The Mynd Edit: How Fashion Shapes Identity, Emotion, and Well-being

The Mynd Edit

Introducing: The Mynd Edit by Fashion Psychologist Jennifer Heinen is Eletom Magazine’s newest monthly Saturday column. Each month, Heinen explores the impact of fashion and how it intersects with conversations and power dynamics across all industries, whether it’s in film, society, and pop culture.

When I tell people I’m a fashion psychologist, the response is often the same—a curious tilt of the head, followed by: “What exactly does that mean?”

The idea that fashion is more than fabric, that what we wear influences not only how others perceive us but how we see ourselves, is something I’ve dedicated my career to exploring. Fashion is not just a form of self-expression—it’s a psychological tool.

At its core, fashion psychology examines the profound link between clothing and cognition, between what we wear and how we think, feel, and behave. It’s about more than just style—it’s about identity, confidence, and emotional well-being.

How I Found Myself Through Fashion Psychology

For me, fashion psychology is deeply personal. It is the lens through which I have come to understand my own evolution, resilience, and sense of self.

Like many, my relationship with fashion started as a personal journey before becoming a professional calling. Before I became a fashion psychologist and speaker, I spent a decade as a fashion designer and stylist. I lived and breathed product, fabric, construction, and trends—always focused on creating something that looked and felt right.

But something shifted.

I realized that while I loved fashion, clothes, and style, I was even more fascinated by what it did to people—how it shaped their emotions, confidence, and identity.

But my path to this field wasn’t linear. It was shaped by loss, rediscovery, and reinvention. There was a time when I lost myself, when life’s upheavals blurred the image I had of who I was and who I wanted to be. In those moments, I found myself turning to clothing, not as a shield, but as a means of reconnecting with the person I knew still existed inside me.

I found myself asking: Why does fashion have this effect on us?

I wanted to understand the human side of fashion, not just the product. I wanted to know why we are drawn to certain clothes, why we hold onto pieces that carry emotional weight, and how we can use clothing for self-expression and emotional regulation.

That curiosity led me to study psychology, focusing on how fashion interacts with memory, identity, and well-being. My work today is about helping people align their external appearance with their inner identity, unlocking confidence and resilience through clothing.

Whether I’m working with clients, conducting research, speaking at events, hosting the Style My Mind Podcast, or writing this column, my goal is the same:

To help people see fashion and style for what they truly are—tools for self-discovery and transformation.

Because sometimes, the right outfit is more than just clothes—it’s a reminder of who you are, and who you have the power to become.

Fashion is more than aesthetics—it is a tool for survival, resilience, and healing.

The Science Behind What We Wear

Have you ever noticed how putting on your favorite outfit can change your entire mood? That’s because clothing is deeply connected to memory, emotion, and identity.

Research on enclothed cognition (Adam & Galinsky, 2012) shows that the clothes we wear don’t just influence how others perceive us—they actively alter our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. For example:

  • A tailored blazer can make you feel more powerful and in control.
  • Soft, cozy fabrics can offer comfort and a sense of security.
  • Bright colors can boost mood and energy, while darker tones may encourage introspection.

Fashion is a silent language, a conversation between our inner selves and the world. It has the power to reinforce our self-perception, making us feel either aligned or disconnected from who we truly are.

Dressing as an Act of Self-Discovery

One of the most common things I hear from clients is: “I don’t know what my style is anymore.” This is usually a sign of something deeper—a shift in identity. Perhaps they have gone through a career change, a major life transition, or simply lost touch with the version of themselves they once felt confident in.

Fashion psychology offers a roadmap to reclaiming that confidence. When we approach clothing with intention, it becomes more than just getting dressed—it becomes an act of self-affirmation.

So, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect:
What’s the one outfit that makes you feel the most like yourself?
Do you dress for who you are today—or for an older version of yourself?
If your wardrobe could talk, what would it say about your emotions and identity?

What’s Next in This Column

Each month, I’ll be exploring the psychological layers of fashion, from the science of first impressions to the role of clothing in mental health. We’ll uncover the hidden meanings behind our style choices, decode the emotional impact of color, and even explore how clothing can be a tool for resilience.

Fashion psychology is an invitation to look at your wardrobe with fresh eyes—not just as a collection of clothes, but as a reflection of your personal evolution.

Because when we dress with intention, we don’t just change our style—we change our life.
