Blessed with beauty, brains and talent; Italian-Romanian actress Madalina Bellariu Ion is carving a bright path in the entertainment industry, establishing herself as a versatile and talented performer. Her journey mirrors European icons such as Monica Bellucci and Marion Cotillard, who have seamlessly transitioned to Hollywood, capturing the hearts and minds of audiences around the world.

Madalina first rose to fame in Romania with standout performances in shows such as Sacrificiul: Alegerea on Antena 1 and Blue Moon. Since then, her growing international acclaim continues with notable roles in films like Take Cover and most recently, Drained, a 2024 British romance-vampire film co-directed and produced by Sean Cronin. Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival, Drained has become a source of pride for both Madalina and her fans.

Reflecting on her unexpected journey, Madalina shares, “I look back to how things began so many years ago, and it’s unbelievable.” She recalls discovering her passion for acting in a school play, a moment that changed her life forever. “My French teacher asked for volunteers to help with a play for festivals,” she says. “I raised my hand for a better grade and ended up falling head over heels in love with the stage.” Although her first love was dancing, acting eventually took precedence, prompting her to move to London and pursue her dreams at one of the world’s top drama schools.
Her leap of faith—moving to a new country without family or friends—was challenging but it became one of the most ultimately rewarding experiences in her life which led to her pursuing a life-long dream and turning it into a reality, one that she can proudly say was a was a leap of faith, and good fortune.

Madalina’s dedication to her craft led her to study the Meisner technique, a method she credits for helping her connect deeply with her characters. “It’s about living truthfully under imaginary circumstances,” she explains. “The exercises teach you to listen and react authentically, helping you immerse in the role without being trapped by it.” This technique proved invaluable in roles such as her portrayal of a modern slavery victim in the British crime drama Grace. “The role required me to dig deep emotionally and mentally,” she shares.
“I watched harrowing documentaries and conducted extensive research to portray the story authentically while also taking into account the real horrors that the victims lived through.” Collaboration between the actors also played a crucial role, as she and her co-star worked together to build a detailed backstory for their characters, exploring both trauma and resilience.
Madalina highlights the mental toll of transitioning between emotionally heavy roles and going out of character. “These roles stay with you—you can’t help but become more aware of real-world issues,” she says.
Shifting the conversation over to the daunting process that each actor goes through whether they are veterans or emerging talents, Auditioning is more often that not a pre-requisite in the acting world, but for Madalina, however, she takes each opportunity in stride.
Madalina recalled auditioning for The Young Pope with renowned filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. “He asked me to perform the scene in various ways to see if I was directable,” she explains. But she also pointed out that there are plenty of cultural differences that shape storytelling in the film industry since her career spans European cinema, Hollywood, British TV, and Italian films, According to her, “ Portraying an Italian character might involve more expressive hand gestures and melodramatic flair,” she notes. “Working in different languages also affects my physicality, adding depth to the character.”

For emerging actors, this is something that they should note down, as they try to navigate the numerous sub-categories of the film industry. Beyond acting, the pandemic inspired Madalina to explore producing. She has already produced three short films and is currently developing a feature film. “Producing allows me to tell the stories I want to share,” she says, hinting at an upcoming thriller blending her roles as producer and actor.

As she looks to the future, her dreams of collaborating with other female powerhouses such as Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, and Kate Winslet is on her bucket-list . “I admire their work and hope to share the screen with them someday,” she says.
With a drive for exploring complex themes and diverse narratives, In the future, Madalina hopes to push more creative boundaries, not just for her but for her colleagues, who are talented individuals who are hoping to make a break in a world where the chosen few make it.
