Cystic acne, hormonal imbalances, and constant skin breakouts. Let me tell you, for most of my teenage years up to my mid-twenties, I went through the wringer. I was constantly plagued by the sight of an uneven complexion, marked by pimples that would take weeks, sometimes months, to go away. Needless to say, it took plenty of time to finetune my skincare routine to figure out what really works for me.
At 27, after working with my dermatologist ( shoutout to Dr. Morales from Avignon Laser Dermatology Clinic) to cultivate a proper and holistic routine that focused on following prescribed medication, a change in my diet, products, and monthly facials, I could see the changes I hoped to see: clear, unmarked skin with no blemishes and cystic pimples. It was an astonishing surprise because this was something that I, unfortunately, struggled with for the longest time because of genetics.
While plenty of people say switching up your skincare routine is important, I don’t think that’s completely necessary since these products aren’t just good; they’re exceptional. These products have been part of my skincare journey. They’ve given me confidence and security, so I’m excited to share them with you. If you’re battling oily, sensitive skin, you might find your skincare saviors here, too.
Cantabria Labs Espana: Prescribed Dermatological Skincare
BIRETIX Oil Control Cleanser & Tri-Active Anti-Blemish Gel

These revolutionary products hailing from the north of Spain have become integral to my skincare routine. Cantabria Labs’s Biretix line targeted oily, sensitive skin to minimize oil and sebum production. At the same time, it also has a mattifying effect that effectively hydrates yet improves the skin’s texture. The key ingredients in the Biretix line include RetinSphere® Technology (a combination of retinoids for skin renewal), BIOPEP-15 (for antimicrobial action), and Salicylic Acid (to exfoliate and reduce clogged pores).
Meaningful Beauty by Cindy Crawford’s Melon and Retinol Infused Skincare Systems

My mother has been using these products for years; surprisingly enough, they also work for me. My favorites from Cindy Crawford and Dr. Sebagh’s innovative skincare line are the Youth-Activating Eye Roll-on Serum, the Overnight Retinol Cream, Day Cream, the Deep Cleansing Masque, and more. One of the key ingredients in the line is the superoxide dismutase (SOD) from a rare French melon, which is claimed to have antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from free radicals and environmental damage.
Russ and Rose Skincare

This home-grown Filipino brand became a recent addition to my skincare routine. Its lightweight hydrating cream, made from squalane, oatmeal, and Philippine sea grapes, provides an extra layer of moisture during the hot and humid days of the tropics – just what I need for everyday hydration.
Laneige Korean Skincare and Make-up
TheOvernight Lip Sleeping Mask

I can’t stress enough how excellent this product is. I’ve been using Laneige way before the K-wave imploded on a massive global level. For years, the Korean skincare brand has been making waves for its water hydrating bank and its overnight lip sleeping mask, which provide an incredible amount of hydration to an often neglected part of our face. This lip mask has a rich, balm-like texture that helps soften the lips while addressing dryness and flakiness. The main ingredient in this product is the Moisture Wrap™ technology, which contains hyaluronic acid and minerals to lock in moisture, and Berry Mix Complex™, which provides antioxidants from various berries to soothe and protect your lips.
Nicolash Magnetic Lashes
The Reusable Cleansing Puffs

Another Filipino gem that has found its way into my routine is Nicolash by Wellness Entrepreneur Nicola Puno. Known for her aloe vera-infused magnetic lashes and liners, Nicola also offers these amazing, soft, reusable cleansing puffs. They ensure my skin is properly cleansed from makeup and impurities, leaving my face fresh and ready for the next step in my skincare routine.
The Ordinary: Effective Clinical Skincare
Niacinamide + Zinc Serum

The Ordinary‘s Niacinamide + Zinc Serum is iconic for a reason—it works! I first heard about it from a friend when I was searching for products to complement my prescription skincare. Though I don’t use it daily anymore, it’s my go-to for spot treatment on any pesky blemishes. This serum is a must for anyone with oily, acne-prone skin, but honestly, it’s a great addition to most routines. It helps control shine, minimizes pores, and boosts skin clarity. Just a little tip: avoid using it with strong acids like Vitamin C, as that can reduce its effectiveness.
It’s important to remember that while these products work for me, it’s crucial to consult with your dermatologist before trying anything new. Skincare is highly personal, and what works for one person might not work for another. The last thing you want is to trigger a breakout or reaction, so take your time, research, and find what truly works for you.
